How do I passphrase-protect a share?

Require a word or phrase before anyone can view a share.

Updated 24 Aug 2026

A passphrase adds a lock screen to a share — reviewers must enter it before they can view. Useful for confidential cuts.

Add a passphrase

  1. When creating a share (or editing one), turn on Passphrase.
  2. Enter the word or phrase (4+ characters).
  3. Optionally add a hint shown on the unlock screen.
  4. Save or create the share, then send the link. Share the passphrase separately (e.g. over chat), not in the same message as the link.

How it behaves for reviewers

They enter the passphrase once and stay unlocked for a while — they won’t be re-prompted on every page. Changing or removing the passphrase invalidates existing unlocks.

Require it everywhere

Admins can make every share require a passphrase from the workspace security settings — see workspace security defaults.
