Frame.io free plan limits in 2026 — and what to do when you hit them
Frame.io's free plan gives you 2 GB and two members. Here's exactly where that runs out on a real job, and the cheaper ways around it for Indian editors.
Frame.io’s free plan caps you at 2 GB of storage, up to 2 members, and 2 projects. That’s enough to test the tool, but not enough to run a real client job — a single ProRes master or a long 4K export can eat the whole 2 GB, and the two-member limit means your client often can’t get in without you buying a seat. Here’s where it breaks and what the cheaper fixes are.
What the free plan actually includes
As of October 2026, Frame.io Free gives you:
- 2 GB storage — total, not per project
- Up to 2 members — people on the account
- Up to 2 projects
- Core review features (comments, Camera to Cloud, transcription)
The features are fine. The ceilings are the problem.
Where you hit the wall
Storage runs out almost immediately. Video is big. One 10-minute 4K export, or a couple of ProRes versions of the same cut, and 2 GB is gone. You spend your time deleting old files to make room instead of editing — and if you’re also using free tools to move the file, you’ve probably already run into the limits on WeTransfer for video review and Google Drive.
The two-member cap blocks your client. This is the one that actually forces the upgrade. On most jobs the people who matter are the client-side reviewers — and if “members” are capped at two, adding a producer plus a client pushes you straight into a paid, per-seat plan. The free tier quietly assumes it’s just you and one other person.
Two projects isn’t a pipeline. If you run more than one client at a time, you’re archiving and deleting to stay under the cap.
The expensive fix
The obvious move is to upgrade Frame.io. But the paid plans are per member in US dollars — Pro is about ₹1,700 per member per month once you convert and add GST, Team about ₹2,830. Add two or three people and you’re near ₹8,500 a month. We did the full rupee breakdown in Frame.io pricing in INR. For a freelancer who just needed a client to leave three comments, that’s a lot.
The cheaper fix
The thing that forces the Frame.io upgrade — clients counting against a member cap — doesn’t have to exist at all. On Editlock, reviewers and clients are always unlimited and free, on every plan including the free one. A client opens a share link, comments on the timeline, and approves — no seat, no account required.
Being straight with you: Editlock’s free tier is also 2 GB, and files on it expire after 5 days — it’s built to try the full flow, not to be permanent storage. The real difference is two-sided:
- Free, unlimited reviewers mean the free plan is actually usable for a real client review, not just a solo demo.
- The paid step-up is flat INR, not per-seat USD. Starter is ₹599/month for 150 GB with up to 5 members — roughly a third of what one Frame.io Team seat costs, with far more room.
So when 2 GB fills up — and it will — the question isn’t “how many dollar seats do I buy.” It’s “which flat rupee tier matches my library,” while every client stays free.
The short version
Frame.io Free is a fine trial and a poor workhorse: 2 GB and a two-member cap are built to nudge you onto a per-seat dollar plan the moment real clients show up. If you’re an Indian editor or small studio, start on Editlock’s free tier instead — the whole review flow, unlimited free clients — and step up to a flat ₹599–1,699 plan only when your storage, not your headcount, says so.
